Nowhere else does brunch mean what it means in Dubai: a four-hour, weekend-defining format with its own arrival, peak and long tail. Most venues run it on a playlist that has no idea it is 2:30pm and the room has turned. The ones that program the arc — and know what a DJ does to their licence — own the format.
The shape of a brunchDiagnosis
A brunch is an arc, not a mood. Arrival at noon is bright and low-key; the room fills and lifts through one; the peak sits somewhere between two and three; and the last hour lingers, either winding down toward the afternoon or lifting into a 'brunch after-party' depending on the venue. Program it as three or four dayparts inside one service and the room follows. Leave it to a shuffled playlist and the peak arrives by accident, or not at all.
The DJ question matters more than it used to. A DJ brunch is live entertainment — it needs its permit (Dubai DET permit and DTCM NOC) — and from 1 December 2026 it puts the venue in the entertainment tier of the new music tariff: AED 2,500–8,000 a year by seat count, versus AED 1,500–6,000 for background music only. A venue that runs a DJ on Saturdays and licenses as 'background' is under-licensed exactly when it is busiest.

A beach club's Saturday brunch peaked at 1pm — the playlist's doing, not the room's — and drifted for two hours after. Re-programmed as an arc, the peak moved to 2:30 where the room actually was, the tail lifted into an after-party, and the DJ, now permitted, took the peak instead of fighting the playlist for it.
