At any given budget the serious brands are all competent. Coverage, headroom and tuning decide how it sounds — not the badge on the grille.
Most operators meet this question during fit-out, when a contractor hands them a quote with brand names on it and no explanation. The honest version is simpler than it looks: a restaurant sound system is a number of zones, enough speakers to cover the seats evenly, an amplifier with headroom, a processor to tune the room, and a locked source. Get those five right and the room sounds good on any budget. Get them wrong and no amount of money fixes it.
Because they price different things. One quote covers speakers and an amplifier; another adds a DSP, cabling and calibration; a third bundles the ceiling work and the commissioning visit. The brand names in the middle — Martin Audio, RCF, d&b, Bose, JBL — are the part operators fixate on and the part that matters least, because at a given budget they are all competent. What separates a good install from a bad one is coverage, headroom and tuning.
The second reason is that nobody asks the venue's actual question first: how many distinct rooms are there, and does each need its own volume and its own programme? A terrace, a main room and a private dining room are three zones. If the system is wired as one, the terrace will always be too loud or the private room too quiet, and no equaliser will fix it — the mistake was made in the wiring diagram.
And the third: the quote almost never mentions what will play through it. A venue can spend AED 80,000 on an install and then run it from a phone behind the bar. The hardware is the last 10% of how a room sounds; the programme is the other 90%.

A terrace, a main room and a private room have different volumes and different needs. Wire them as one and every setting is wrong somewhere.
Even coverage at low volume beats a couple of speakers working hard. Guests under the speaker shout; guests at the far table hear nothing.
A room's hard surfaces, glass and ceiling height change the sound more than the speaker choice does. An untuned system in a live room sounds harsh at any price.
The most common outcome. The install is the smaller investment; what plays through it is what guests actually hear.
First, count the zones — every space that needs its own volume or its own mood is a zone: main room, terrace, private dining, bar, bathrooms, back of house. Second, cover the seats: more small speakers spread evenly beats fewer loud ones, so nobody sits under a hotspot and nobody sits in a dead patch. Ceiling speakers for flat coverage, small surface-mount boxes where the ceiling is high or the terrace is open.
Third, give the amplifier headroom — a system running at 30% of its capacity stays clean all night; one running at 90% gets harsh exactly when the room fills. Fourth, put a processor in front of it (a DSP such as Q-SYS or Symetrix on larger sites) and have someone tune it in the actual room, with the actual surfaces. Fifth, decide the source and lock it: staff get volume, not the ability to change what plays.
That last one is where hardware meets programming. We design and install systems for venues across the UAE and the Gulf — survey, acoustic design, DSP, speakers, calibration, project-managed to opening day — and then programme the music through them. But the sequence matters more than the supplier: zones, coverage, headroom, tuning, locked source. Any competent integrator following that order will give you a room that sounds right.
The most expensive fix we see is a venue that wired a terrace and a dining room to the same zone. Every evening someone split the difference: the terrace slightly too quiet for the traffic noise, the dining room slightly too loud for conversation. Re-zoning cost a fraction of the original install and changed both rooms in an afternoon.
Enough for even coverage at a conversational volume — as a rule of thumb, ceiling speakers spaced roughly at the ceiling height apart, so no table sits directly under a hotspot or in a gap. A 100-seat room typically lands somewhere between eight and sixteen, depending on ceiling height and layout. More small speakers at low volume always beats fewer loud ones.
It scales with zones and coverage, not with floor area alone. A single-zone café can be equipped competently for a low four figures; a multi-zone restaurant with a terrace, DSP and proper calibration runs into five. The line worth protecting in any budget is the tuning visit — it changes the result more than an upgrade in speaker brand.
For a single small room, a decent amplifier with basic EQ can be enough. From two zones up, a processor pays for itself: independent volume and tuning per zone, limiters that stop anyone damaging the system, and presets you can trust. On larger sites this is where Q-SYS or Symetrix earn their place.
No, and conflating them is the most common and most expensive mistake. The sound system is the hardware that carries the audio; the music system is the programming that decides what plays, when and at what energy. A great install playing a shuffled playlist still sounds like a shuffled playlist.
